The Royal Australian Mint proudly supports the Government's commemorative program "Their Service - Our Heritage," which provides all Australians with the opportunity to acknowledge the debt owed to those who served in the defence of Australia's freedom.
IN THE PRE-DAWN gloom they rowed ashore. Australians and New Zealanders. Little did they know, that 25 April 1915 morn, as they landed at Gallipoli, they would begin a legend whose values and traditions have become a part of the ethos of both nations.
What began as an acronym - ANZAC, for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps - has entered the lexicon as a word in its own right.
‘Anzac’ means mateship; a spirit of courage, strength in adversity, selflessness, initiative - tempered with a laconic humour.
Those Anzacs who fought more than 80 years ago are passing on. Soon their era will be gone. Yet, living on, a legacy to their nations, are the traditions they forged under shell and rifle fire. In later wars and conflicts new generations of Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women have continued to uphold these values.
