The Australian Open, the only Grand Slam tennis event held in the southern hemisphere, began at the Warehousemen's Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 21 November 1905. Since then, the tournament has been contested on 99 occasions. It was interrupted by the two World Wars and was not played in 1986, when the tournament was moved from mid-December to mid-January. Initially a grass court event, the Australian Open was moved to hard court in 1988 with the opening of Melbourne Park.
