The Echidna is one of the only currently living mammals that lay eggs. There are only two species alive today, one living in New Guinea and one in Australia. The Echidna is a small spiny mammal, with black or brown spines. One interesting feature of the Echidna is that when under threat, it curls up into a tiny ball pointing its spines at its predator. An Echidna has a long snout sometimes measuring up to 10cm that is used to help find food supplies. The Perth mint produced this $1 coin and accompanying stamps to show of this unique animal.
