The personification of Britain for nearly two millennia, Britannia first appeared on coins during the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian (117-138AD). She was recalled to Britain’s currency by King Charles II in 1672 following the Restoration of the Monarchy after the English Civil Wars.
