From 1923 to 1963, Flying Scotsman worked on the East Coast Main Line and the main line to London Marylebone, passing moors, farmland, rolling hills, country towns, and villages. Retired from service in 1963, the next 45 years saw the locomotive endure a rocky ride due to several changes in ownership, "Thankfully, funds raised by a campaign spearheaded by the National Railway Museum saved it for the nation in 2004.
