The Ice Age witnessed the spread of large glaciers, known as ice sheets, across much of the Earth. Alongside the glaciers, large mammals, predators, foragers, and the fauna adapted to grassland roamed the icy terrain. The woolly mammoth was one of these giants, immediately recognizable with its long curved tusks and a shaggy coat suited to the cold. In some areas of the Earth, the woolly mammoth was so abundant, they are often called the "woolly giants."
