Damien Parer (1912–44) was the first photographer commissioned by the Australian government during World War II. He served behind the lens in the Middle East and North Africa, before joining Western forces in New Guinea in 1942. Parer was tragically killed by Japanese gunfire in 1944, while covering American operations in Palau. The cover photograph by Parer shows Australian Sergeant Gordon Ayre helping a wounded mate in New Guinea in 1943, for which he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. The miniature medal is a replica of the Military Medal.

This cover is a limited edition of 250 and includes a foiled postmark and numbering. Stamps on cover are from the Picturing War stamp issue released 16 April 2024 and the Kokoda Joint Issue with PNG issued 10 April 2010.
