In 1916 Australia commissioned the British war photographer Herbert Baldwin (1880–1920) to photograph the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on the Western Front during late 1916 and early 1917. Baldwin took over 540 photographs using glass plate negatives. With the mud making advances almost impossible and both sides settling down in winter, Baldwin photographed the battlefields where the Australians had fought in 1916. His compelling, evocative images present the sombre aftermath of bombings and intimate studies of soldiers. The stamps show Baldwin’s photograph of the official Australian war correspondent Charles (CEW) Bean ($1) and an unknown photographer’s image of Baldwin ($1.50). The miniature medal is a replica of the 1914–15 Star awarded to Bean and all who served in the British and Imperial forces during 1914 and 1915 in World War I.

This cover is a limited edition of 250 and includes a foiled postmark and numbering. Stamps on cover are from the Picturing War stamp issue released 16 April 2024 and the Centenary of WWI:1917 issued 18 April 2017
